Last week, AWS announced the general availability of AWS Nitro Enclaves—a service for processing sensitive data with secure Amazon EC2 instances. Today, the firm announced that it will be extending its regions in Europe. Besides the recently launched AWS region in Italy, Amazon is currently working on AWS Europe (Zurich) region and is hoping to debut it sometime in 2022.

We’re looking forward to opening the AWS Europe (Zurich) Region in the second half of 2022, serving new and existing customers and collaborating with local partners to drive innovation in Switzerland.

The Zurich region is slated to be AWS’s eighth region in Europe, alongside those Dublin, Frankfurt, London, Paris, Stockholm, Milan, and Spain. These are a subset of the larger 77 availability zones spread across 24 regions worldwide. Zurich will be adding to this tally with three availability zones of its own, bringing the count to 27 regions worldwide.

The idea to expand into Zurich, Switzerland was taken after considering the growth of businesses utilizing AWS services in the country. The new region will allow local customers with data residency constraints to store their data within Switzerland. It will also allow customers to run their applications and serve end-users from data centers located in the country, lowering latencies in applications across the region.
