In recent cloud-related news, Microsoft made a variety of enhancements for Azure Archive Storage generally available. Earlier this month, the tech giant committed further cloud support for frontline non-profits combating COVID-19.

Today, the firm has announced that Azure Migrate is being introduced in Azure Government. Previously, the migration services in the platform were restricted to limited scale assessment for VMware workloads. The latest version, dubbed Azure Migrate V2, brings a host of other services as well.

For starters, all tools to help track large-scale datacenter migrations will be provided in the form of a “central hub of Microsoft and ISV migration tools”. The migration scenarios that are covered under this support are described as:

  • Windows and Linux servers—Largescale discovery, assessment, and migration for VMware, Hyper-V, and bare metal servers. Features include agentless discovery, application inventory mapping, dependency mapping, and cost analysis. You can also migrate VMware VMs (now generally available) to Azure with zero data loss and minimal downtime using an agentless migration, in addition to the agent-based migration capability.
  • SQL and other databases—Assessment and migration for a variety of on-premises databases to Azure SQL database and Azure SQL Database managed instance.
  • Web-apps—Assessment and migration of .NET and PHP web apps to Azure App Service.
  • Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) migration—Migration of virtual desktop infrastructure to Windows Virtual Desktop in Azure.
  • Data migration—Migration of block data to Azure using Data Box.

Initially, Azure Migrate support for Azure Government is being extended to include the “US Gov Arizona” and “US Gov Virginia” regions. The migration service is already available in public cloud regions including Asia Pacific, Australia, Canada, Europe, India, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The availability of individual stock-keeping units (SKUs) will vary depending on the regions in question.

Current Azure Government customers can get started with Azure Migrate for free. Those who meet the eligibility requirements to subscribe to the government-centered platform can request for a trial here. Azure Migrate can be read about in more detail here.
