Brave, the browser known for having built-in ad-blocking, is rolling out Brave Ads today. That probably sounds counter-intuitive, but this is ads done in a different way than you’re used to. Brave wants to change how publishers like XDA make money, which is why we recently partnered with them. So how does the ad-blocking browser do ads?
First of all, Brave Ads is completely opt-in. They work with Brave’s existing reward system. If you choose to turn on Brave Ads, you’ll receive 70% of the gross ad revenue paid out in BAT. At the end of every month, you can donate your BAT to sites like XDA.
Since the ads are opt-in, brands know their ads are being viewed by users who want to see them. They can highlight offers, promote content, and engage with users in a way that most web ads can’t. Right now there are over 500 ads from brands like Home Chef, Vice, and MyCrypto.
Another advantage to Brave Ads is the privacy features. There is no tracking going on at all since Brave already blocks cross-site web trackers. Also, you will never mistake a Brave Ad for a typical web ad. They appear as unobtrusive notifications that you can engage with or ignore. By default, you’ll only see 2 ads per hour, but this can be adjusted.
Obviously, a lot of people use Brave to avoid ads completely, and users can continue using the browser in that way. However, if you don’t mind a few better ads, this is a great way to support the sites you love. Brave Ads can be enabled in version 0.63 for Windows, macOS, or Linux.
