XDA has teamed up with F(x)tec and the team behind LineageOS to launch the world’s first smartphone that runs on LineageOS out of the box. For the uninitiated, LineageOS is a popular custom ROM that’s available for a wide variety of Android devices out there. It is based on the AOSP-version of the OS but the team behind the ROM has added their own set of features and tweaks to it.

The Pro1-X is based on the F(x)tec Pro 1 that was originally announced last year. It features a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, a 5.99-inch FHD+ AMOLED display, Snapdragon 835 chipset, 8GB RAM, 256GB storage, and a 3,200mAh battery with Quick Charge 3.0 support. The front of the phone houses an 8MP camera while the rear has a 12MP f/1.8 shooter paired with a 5MP depth sensor.

The highlight of the F(x)tec Pro-1X is that it runs on LineageOS out of the box. XDA notes that its main reason to create this phone is to give customers a choice and control over their data as LineageOS has a number of privacy-oriented features. Apart from LineageOS, XDA and F(x)tec will also offer customers the option of getting the phone with Ubuntu Touch. This is the world’s first smartphone with a Qualcomm chipset to run the touch version of Ubuntu. Apart from this, the team behind the phone is also working on other OS support for the device including Sailfish OS.

The F(x)tec Pro1-X is estimated to ship in March 2021 and carries a retail price of $899. The device is being crowdfunded on Indiegogo though, and one can get the Pro 1-X for as low as $599 if they back the project in time to get one of the pre-early bird units.

The F(x)tec Pro1-X is not the first smartphone in the world to run on a custom ROM out of the box though. Back in 2013, OPPO had announced the N1 that ran on CyanogenMod — the spiritual predecessor to LineageOS — out of the box.
