Realme, OPPO’s spin-off brand that sells a line of popular budget and mid-range smartphones in India, has recently come to embrace the development community. The company has opened up bootloader unlocking for the Realme 1, Realme U1, and Realme 2 Pro, and they’ve also released the kernel source code for the aforementioned devices and the Realme 3. Now, the company has updated its bootloader unlock tool and released the kernel sources for its latest mid-range smartphone in India, the Realme 3 Pro.

In our hands-on of the device, we were impressed by its value. With its Qualcomm Snapdragon 710, up to 6GB RAM, 4045mAh battery with 20W VOOC 3.0 charging, dual rear cameras, 25MP front camera, 3.5mm headphone jack, 6.3-inch FHD+ LCD, and ColorOS 6, the Realme 3 Pro is a great mid-range device that puts Xiaomi on notice. If you aren’t a fan of ColorOS, then keep an eye on our forums for custom development to take root. There’s already a working TWRP build, and with kernel sources available developers can work on custom kernels and AOSP-based custom ROMs.

If you unlock the bootloader, do note that the Widevine certification level will drop from L1 to L3. That means HD video playback in apps like HotStar and Amazon Prime Video will no longer be supported until you relock the bootloader.

Android Q beta 3 is available for the device, though it’s fairly buggy so I wouldn’t recommend installing it yet. Once custom ROMs start popping up on our forums, we’ll let you know. Realme’s devices are growing in popularity, so we wouldn’t be surprised if a few developers pick up a 3 Pro in place of the latest Redmi Note.
