Several major trade shows and tech events have been canceled this year due to the coronavirus pandemic, such as the Mobile World Congress and Computex 2020. However, organizers behind IFA vowed last month to press on despite the health risks posed by COVID-19, thanks to an “innovative concept” they’re working on to ensure safety guidelines are met.

In spite of the event organizers’ plans to enforce social distancing, crowd control, and hygiene measures during the upcoming event, one major company has confirmed that it won’t be attending IFA 2020 anyway: Samsung (via Axios). The South Korean tech giant said in a statement that it will instead hold a virtual event early in September.

“We have taken the exciting decision to share our latest news and announcements at our own digital event in early September. While Samsung will not be participating in IFA 2020, we look forward to our continued partnership with IFA in the future.”

The trade show will take place in September in Berlin, Germany. Unlike recent tech conferences and trade events that switched to an online format, IFA 2020 will proceed as an in-person affair, although tight restrictions will be put in place such as strict attendance limits. It will also consist of four separate events, each with a limit of 1,000 visitors per day.
