Smartphone screen diagonals have continued to march on to ever-increasing numbers, giving us bigger phones with every generation. While OEMs have attempted to cut down on bezels in an attempt to maintain useability of devices, true “small form” compact smartphones are definitely a dying breed.
In what will come off as a huge disappointment to people looking forward to a good compact smartphone, it appears that Sony has decided to not release a Compact variant of its upcoming Xperia XZ4 device.
In an interview with Digital Trends, Sony Mobile’s Vice President of Marketing, Mr. Don Mesa accepted that people want a lot more surface area for their content now.
“We stuck with Compact for a very long time, because of the ease of use. There’s always room for different sizes, but people want a lot more surface area for their content now.”
Mr. Mesa’s statements do not directly concede that Sony Mobile has cancelled the Xperia XZ4 Compact, but merely accepts that people have generally grown to prefer bigger smartphones. The statement is definitely open to interpretation, and combined with the fact that the Xperia XZ4 Compact renders have been leaked before through reputed sources like @OnLeaks, one would side with the interpretation that steers towards the probable existence of the XZ4 Compact rather than its cancellation.
However, @OnLeaks himself has conceded that Mr. Mesa’s statements mean that the Compact variant of Sony’s flagship has been axed.

The decision appears to have been taken at the last minute, as @OnLeaks maintains that his leak was not fake despite this new development. The very nature of leaked renders is that the end result may not line up with the render (which is why it is suggested that all leaks are best viewed through glasses of skepticism), so it can very well be that the Compact lineup from Sony is no more, despite the renders.
We still hope that Mr. Mesa’s statements did not directly mean the cancellation of the Compact lineup. But until further leaks or confirmations, it is best to presume that we are unlikely to see a Compact device with flagship-level specs from Sony Mobile anytime soon. Surprise us, Sony.
