The Xiaomi Redmi S2 was announced in the first half of 2018 and ran on MIUI 9.1 Android 8.1 Oreo out-of-the-box. The Redmi S2, known as Redmi Y2 in India, was subsequently updated to Oreo-based MIUI 10, fostering hopes about an update to Android Pie. Although the development of Android Pie for the Redmi S2/Y2 hit a snag, Xiaomi does not seem to be eager on giving up on the smartphone this early.
We have learned that Redmi S2 has received a stable Android Pie update in China. Since the Redmi S2 is essentially the same as Redmi Y2, we can expect the update to be available in India soon, as well. The Redmi Y2 is one of the best selling smartphones in India, so the offering should be exciting for users.
Xiaomi also remained true to its commitment to release the kernel source code of its smartphones in a timely manner. Along with the update, Xiaomi has also released updated kernel sources based on Android Pie for the Redmi S2/Y2. As required under the GNU GPL, companies are required to share the source code of kernels so that the developer community can benefit from it. The availability of the kernel sources for the smartphone is likely to prompt the development of AOSP-based custom ROMs, custom kernels, and other relevant mods.
Thanks to XDA Recognized developer yshalsager for the ROM’s download link.
