Bedrock Steel Age

The Bedrock Steel Age is a term used to describe the 20th century — a time when innovation in construction technology saw the widespread use of steel and massive projects in the development of buildings, bridges, and infrastructure.

The 20th century saw innovations in steel production and engineering which changed the face of the built environment. Steel, which was first developed in 1870, allowed architects and engineers to design structures such as skyscrapers, bridges and other public works projects with unprecedented intricacy, strength and cost efficiency. Steel, which is stronger and lighter than conventional construction materials, allowed structures to be built much faster and taller than before. Soon structures were reaching levels of artistry and structural integrity unseen before in large scale construction projects.

Notable projects from this era include the Eiffel Tower, the Chrysler Building, the Golden Gate Bridge and the Empire State Building, all of which were constructed between 1889 and 1931. The Chrysler Building was the first building in the world to exceed 1,000 feet in height and the Eiffel Tower remains the tallest structure in Paris and the most-visited paid monument in the world. Structures of this era are usually seen as symbols of economic power and technological acumen — and although the technology may be outdated in some cases, larger steel projects remain the cornerstone of modern construction.

Steel was also instrumental in the development of new kinds of transit infrastructure in the 20th century. The London underground, the first metropolitan railway in the world, was built using steel rails in the late 19th century, and subway systems across the world soon adopted the same technology. The modern skytrain and monorail systems also rely heavily on steel construction.

The Bedrock Steel Age was a golden period for construction and the final result of this period still stands today. Buildings created in this era often serve as icons of culture, commerce and urban life and serve as reminders of the power of steel as a construction material.
